At Designer Bathware, wall-hung basins are stocked for bathrooms where floor space matters & the finish needs to feel considered. Fixed directly to the wall with no pedestal or vanity cabinet beneath, a wall-hung basin opens up the floor and makes even a compact bathroom feel less cluttered.
The range spans ceramic, stone resin and solid surface options in white, matte white, matte black and a growing selection of colour and earth-tone finishes - from brands including Fienza, Caroma, Omvivo, Cassa Design and more.
Why Choose a Wall Hung Basin
Wall hung basins, also called wall-mounted basins or wall-mounted hand basins, work differently to vanity-mounted or above counter options. A few reasons buyers choose them:
- Floor space is fully clear - nothing sits beneath the basin, which makes the room feel more open and is easier to clean around
- Height is adjustable - unlike a vanity unit, the basin can be fixed at exactly the right height for the user, which matters in accessible bathrooms and households with varied height preferences
- Smaller footprint - many wall-hung basins project less than 350mm from the wall, making them one of the only practical choices in a very narrow powder room or compact ensuite
- Visual weight is reduced - floating off the wall rather than sitting on a cabinet gives the room a lighter, more open feel
The trade-off is that supply and waste plumbing must be concealed in the wall during the build phase. It is not a decision to make after tiling.
How to Choose the Right Wall-Mounted Basin for a Small Bathroom
For a small bathroom, wall-hung basins are often the most space-efficient choice available. Here is how to narrow it down:
1. Check the projection depth
Wall-hung basins typically project between 250mm and 450mm from the wall. In a very tight powder room, a model projecting 300mm or under makes a significant difference to available floor space.
2. Consider shape
Rectangular wall-hung basins with sharp profiles suit a narrow space where clean geometry reads well. Round or oval wall hung basins soften the space and work in bathrooms with a warmer or more organic aesthetic.
3. Think about tap hole position
Most wall-hung basins include one pre-drilled tap hole on the basin itself. Some are designed for wall-mounted tapware only, with no tap hole at all. Wall-mounted tapware keeps the basin surface completely clear, which is the cleaner option in a compact bathroom.
4. Match the finish to the room
A white or matte white wall-hung basin against a white wall disappears visually and gives the room a more spacious feel. A black wall-hung basin or coloured stone option becomes a deliberate feature - right for a bathroom where the brief calls for contrast and character.
What Material Should a Wall Hung Basin Be
Ceramic wall hung basin
The most widely stocked format. Hard-wearing, easy to clean, holds its finish well over time. Gloss white and matte white are the two most common options.
Stone resin wall hung basin
Heavier than ceramic, with more visual depth and a warmer feel. Available in natural earth tones including sandy, slate and terracotta colourways, particularly from the Concrete Studio and Kiln ranges. Worth confirming the wall structure can carry the additional weight before ordering.
Solid surface wall-hung basin
Cast composite material that can be formed into seamless shapes. Warmer to the touch than ceramic, available in both white and textured finishes. A strong mid-point between ceramic and stone in terms of weight and price.
Wall Hung Basin with Towel Rail
One practical question that comes up regularly: can a towel rail be fitted alongside a wall-hung basin?
Yes, and it works well in compact bathrooms where a heated towel rail or standard rail needs to sit nearby, but there is no vanity cabinet to mount one to. Options include:
- Wall-mounted towel rail fitted to the adjacent wall at an appropriate height
- Basin with integrated towel bar - some wall-hung basin models include a rail or ledge built into the basin body itself, which keeps the solution within a minimal footprint
- Freestanding towel rail positioned to the side of the basin where floor space allows
If using a heated towel rail nearby, confirm the electrical rough-in is planned before the wall is closed.
